Port Arthur
Kiwanis Club History
The Port Arthur Kiwanis
Club was chartered April 24, 1931. It was the only club chartered in the
Texas-Oklahoma District that year. Comments from District Governor R. G.
Storey [Kiwanis Club of Dallas, Texas] on his administrative year explain the
general climate in which the Port Arthur Kiwanis Club was born:
" The objectives
were.... 1. Maintaining Kiwanis Clubs and the organization. As you will
recall, this particular year was during the depression and financial
retrenchments were being made everywhere, including members dropping out on
account of curtailment of income. We made a special drive to prevent clubs
in smaller towns from disbanding because of the financial strain. We wound
up the year generally with maintaining the 'Status Quo'.
2. The Underprivileged Children's Work was emphasized and carried forward very
effectively, even though it was during the depression" ‡
